A breakdown of every variable a real 3D printing cost calculator needs — material, machine hour rate, electricity, labor, failure, overhead — and the formulas behind each.
A 3D printing cost calculator that asks for "filament weight" and "print time" and gives you a number is not a calculator — it's a toy. Real cost calculation is multi-variable, and missing variables is exactly why most hobby print shops never become real businesses.
What a real calculator must capture
Material
- Filament or resin used, in grams or mL
- Material unit cost (per kg or per liter)
- Spool/bottle waste factor (typical 3–8%)
- Support material if separate
Machine
- Printer purchase price
- Expected lifetime hours
- Annual service & wear-part cost (nozzles, belts, FEP/LCD, build plates)
- Resulting machine hour rate
Energy
- Average wattage during print
- Local kWh rate
- Idle/heat-up overhead (small but real)
Labor
- Slicing & prep time
- Loading/start time
- Removal & cleanup time
- Customer comms time
- Hourly labor rate
Post-processing
- Sanding, painting, gluing, assembly time
- Consumables (primer, paint, hardware)
Overhead
- Software, rent, insurance, packaging — recovered as a flat %
Risk
- Failure rate (% by part complexity)
- Buffer for reprints, lost shipments, refunds
The formulas
materialCost = weight × unitCost × (1 + wasteFactor)
machineCost = printHours × machineHourRate
energyCost = avgKW × printHours × kWhRate
laborCost = laborHours × laborRate
postCost = postHours × laborRate + consumables
subtotal = materialCost + machineCost + energyCost + laborCost + postCost
withOverhead = subtotal × (1 + overhead%)
withRisk = withOverhead × (1 + failureRate)
finalPrice = withRisk / (1 − marginTarget)
Note the final step uses margin not markup — if you want a 50% gross margin you divide, you don't multiply.
What most "calculators" miss
