How to Price 3D Prints: The Complete 2026 Guide
A step-by-step framework for pricing 3D prints in 2026 — covering material, machine time, electricity, labor, failure rate, overhead, and profit margin with real examples.
Why most makers underprice their work
The single most common mistake new 3D print sellers make is pricing by "feel." They eyeball the part, double the cost of filament, and call it a quote. Then six months later they realize they've been working for $3 an hour — and they have no idea where the money went.
A correct 3D printing quote is the sum of seven discrete inputs. Miss any one and your margin disappears the first time a print fails or a customer asks for a tweak.
The seven-input pricing formula
Quote = (Material + Machine + Energy + Labor + Post-processing + Overhead) × Failure factor × (1 + Margin)
Every line item is below in detail.
1. Material cost
This is the most obvious cost and almost always under-counted.
- Filament/resin used (grams or mL) × unit cost.
- Add support material if you use a soluble or separate spool.
- Add a 3–8% spool waste factor — purges, skirt, brim, the last 30 g you can't print with.
- Don't forget rafts and infill, which slicers report inside the total weight.
A 250 g print at $24/kg PLA is not $6. It's $6 × 1.05 spool waste = $6.30, plus the few grams of purge tower you used because you had to change colors.
2. Machine time (printer depreciation)
Your printer wears out. The nozzle, hotend, belts, bed, screen (for resin) all have replacement schedules. Convert them into an hourly cost.
A simple formula:
Hourly machine cost = (Printer price + Annual maintenance) / Expected lifetime hours
A $400 Bambu A1, with $80/year in maintenance, expected to print 4,000 hours over 3 years:
($400 + $240) / 4000 = $0.16/hr
That feels low — and for an A1 it is. But the real number for a resin printer with $80 LCDs every 1,500 hours is closer to $0.25/hr. A $1,200 Prusa MK4 running 6,000 lifetime hours lands around $0.30–0.45/hr including service parts.
3. Electricity
Real numbers, not guesses:
- FDM machines pull ~80–150 W during print, ~600 W during bed heat.
- Resin machines pull ~30–80 W.
- A heated build chamber doubles this.
Average it to ~120 W for FDM, ~50 W for resin, and multiply by your kWh rate. At $0.16/kWh:
10 hr FDM print = 0.12 kW × 10 × $0.16 = $0.19
Electricity is rarely the biggest line item, but it's the easiest to forget completely.
4. Labor
This is where every hobbyist loses money. You must pay yourself.
Bill labor at your target hourly rate. Track:
- File prep & slicing (5–20 min)
- Loading, leveling, first-layer check (5 min)
- Print removal (2–10 min)
- Support removal & basic cleanup (5–60 min)
- Customer communication, quoting, invoicing (10–20 min per job)
For a typical small custom job, 30–45 minutes of real human time is normal. At $25/hr that's $12.50–18.75 in labor — often more than the material cost.
5. Post-processing
If the customer wants it sanded, painted, glued, or assembled, that's a separate line. Quote it by the hour at your labor rate, plus the consumable cost (primer, paint, sandpaper, epoxy, hardware).
6. Overhead
Rent, internet, software subscriptions, insurance, packaging supplies, the spare parts shelf — none of these belong on any single job, but they all need to be recovered. Add a flat 10–15% on top of subtotal to cover overhead unless you've calculated yours precisely.
7. Failure rate
Prints fail. Pretending they don't is how you go broke. A reasonable industry baseline is:
- Simple FDM parts: 5%
- Complex or large FDM parts: 10–15%
- Resin: 8–12%
- Multi-part assemblies: 15–25%
Multiply the subtotal by your failure factor (e.g., 1.10 for 10%).
Margin vs markup
Once you have your true cost, apply a profit margin. Margin and markup are not the same.
- Markup is added to cost: cost × (1 + markup%). A 50% markup on $20 = $30.
- Margin is a slice of the final price: price = cost / (1 − margin%). A 50% margin on $20 cost = $40.
For most maker businesses, target 40–60% gross margin on custom work. Production runs and Etsy listings often need 65–75% to absorb fees and shipping.
A worked example
Customom miniature, 12 hr print, 80 g resin, 30 min cleanup, $25/hr labor, 10% failure, 50% margin:
