FDM vs Resin: Cost, Quality, and When to Use Each

A side-by-side comparison of FDM and resin 3D printing in 2026 — capital cost, consumables, hourly running cost, detail, strength, and which one to pick per use case.

The FDM-vs-resin question is older than the hobby, but the economics shift every year as new printers arrive. Here's the 2026 picture, framed around what actually drives cost and what you should pick.

Both technologies start at roughly the same entry point. FDM costs more at the mid tier because of multi-color systems (AMS, MMU). Resin gets more expensive at the top because of larger print volumes and faster LCDs.

Consumables

FDM is dramatically cheaper per gram:

  • Generic PLA: $15–25/kg
  • Premium PLA: $25–40/kg
  • PETG: $20–35/kg
  • ABS/ASA: $25–40/kg
  • Carbon-fiber blends: $50–100/kg

Resin is more expensive but uses far less material per part:

  • Standard resin: $25–50/L
  • ABS-like tough: $40–80/L
  • Water-washable: $35–60/L
  • Engineering (Siraya Blu, Phrozen TR): $80–150/L

The per-part difference is smaller than the unit costs suggest because resin parts are usually small and hollow-able.

Hourly running cost

After accounting for printer depreciation and wear parts:

  • FDM: $0.12–0.45/hr depending on machine and how aggressively you run it
  • Resin: $0.20–0.60/hr — driven by LCD replacement every 1,500–2,500 hours ($60–200) and FEP every 30–60 prints

Resin's higher running cost surprises people. The screen is a true consumable.

Detail and surface finish

  • FDM resolves features down to ~0.2 mm reliably. Layer lines are visible.
  • Resin resolves features down to ~0.05 mm. Layer lines are essentially invisible on most parts.

For miniatures, jewelry, dental, and any tiny mechanical part, resin wins by a mile. For functional prints over 50 mm, FDM is often indistinguishable after light sanding.

Strength and durability

  • FDM in PETG, PC, ASA, or nylon is tough. It bends before it shatters.
  • Resin is usually stiff but brittle. Even "tough" resins are weaker than entry-level PETG in real-world impact.

Anything that takes a load, lives outdoors, or needs to last years should be FDM unless you have a very specific engineering resin.

Labor cost is wildly different

This is the variable people forget.

  • A typical FDM part: 5 min slice + 2 min remove + 0 min wash + 0 min cure = ~7 min labor
  • A typical resin part: 5 min slice + 5 min drain + 5 min IPA wash + 5 min cure + 5 min support removal = ~25 min labor

At a $25/hr labor rate, resin's labor delta alone is $7.50 per print. That's often more than the material cost.

When to pick each

Pick FDM for: functional parts, brackets, enclosures, jigs, large props, anything outdoor, anything that needs to bend, batches of identical parts, anything you're selling under $30.

Pick resin for: miniatures, tabletop, dental aligners, jewelry, master patterns for casting, anything where surface finish matters more than strength, premium-priced collectibles.

Run both if: you're a service bureau or you do tabletop terrain (FDM bases + resin minis is the canonical combo).

A 50 mm articulated dragon, printed both ways:

The resin print is genuinely 3× more expensive per unit. But it sells for $35 instead of $12. Both are good businesses — they're just different businesses.
